III State Level Summit on Astrology Dated 27-01-2002

Speech delivered by

Shri Vidvan T V Laxminarasimhaiah

who presided over the Function

Shri Gurubhyo Namaha,

Parama Poojya Sri Jagadguru Veerasimhasana Suttur Math shri shri shri shivaratri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji, Dignitaries present on the dias, Office bearers of institute of  Jyothirvijnan, Scholars of Astrology, my dear elder and younger friends.

Among Vedangas (The Vedanga (vedānga, "limbs of the Veda") are six auxiliary disciplines traditionally associated with the study and understanding of the Vedas) Jyogthisha Vedanga is of paramount importance. In the world of Astrological Science it is said that time-space forms a basis for all purposes.  As it is the Supreme Being its manifestation will be through planets, stars and other astral objects. So in relation to Stars, pros and cons should be explained through Shruti (hearing), Smruthi (Reminiscence), Itihasa (Hystory), Puranas(legend), Agama (religion), Samhitha(compilation of knowledge), Tantra (scriptures), Pourusha, Nibandhana Grantha (Regulatory Script) by the learned.

It is a widely known fact that the ancient Indian Tradition has offered a special Mathematical cognizance to the whole world.  It is understood that Brahmi Numerals in the 3rd Century BCE, Babylonian Mathematics in the 2nd Century BC, Egyptian and Arabic numerals have come into existence by the during the 2nd and 3rd century.

For example, Chandra for 1, kara for 2, rama for 3, veda for 4, bana for 5, runa for 6, giri for 7 gaja for 8 were used for day to day activities. Based on Sanskrit scripts avyakta ganita or Algebra called Mukhabila was formed. 2nd Century BC Pingala in his Chanda sutras (or history of combinatorics -study of countable discrete structures) analytically mentions about the usage of zero. In the 5th century zero was used in Pamcha Siddhantica.  Bhaskara, the author of Maha Bhaskariya had also used zero. The introduction of zero to the Mathematics has brought everlasting fame to Indian Mathematicians.

The Saint Sumanthu in his Bhavishya Purana (one of the eighteen major Hindu Puranas), in the form of question and answers about the duties and signs of women between the king Shatanika and Brahma mentions the requirement of at least 36 years to study Vedatrayas (the three Vedas viz. Samaveda, Rigveda, Yajurveda). By the study of a great script Brihatha Samhitha, we can learn about animals, birds, Deities, colors, shapes etc. Vastu shastra (Ancient Indian guide to Architecture) helps us understand purusha drushti, laying the foundation, fixation of dates, Aaya (income) etc. For marriage and other auspicious functions when horoscope is not available they resorted to practice of using kavade(Cowrie Shells) shastra, questioning, facial Indications, apparent actions for predictions

Mathematics, Phalita, Muhurtha (Hindu unit of measurement), Vastu Shilpa, manufacturing weaponry, manufacturing mechanical contrivances for usage in water and air were all understood and followed from this astrological science. Astrologers used to prescribe the dates and times for worshipping deities, performing festivals. As the authentic saying “agni purvaroopam aditya uttara roopam” from thaittiriyopanishat goes the original form of Sun is Agni (or fire). At the time of completion of srushti (process of creation) during annihilation Sun again takes his original form Agni. It is observed that according to astrological science Galaxy contained in it 12 Rashis like Mesha, Vrushabha etc (12 full moons) 27 Nakshatras like Ashva, etc (27 stars) which influence our lives and Chandra is a mans-karaka (controller of emotional attachments), Surya is atmakaraka (significator of the soul's desire), our body is made up of panchabhuthas (five elements) – Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space and many more such invaluable information was received from Astrology.

As the Upanishad quote “Bhramanda chaiva pindandam” propounds pindanda (microcosm) contains all the elements that Brahmanda (macrocosm) contains. Considering the disposition of life, son, friend, wife, money and the woes of the worldly life and to escape from the same Vyasa Maharishi explains “tapatrayagni samtapta samaahlaadanachamdrika” in his Shri Lalithopakhyana of the magnum opus Brahmanda purana. While concluding Vedic classes as a last teaching to invoke peace “om shanthi shanthi shanthihi” is chanted three times which will remove tapatryas (the troubles) attached to adi daiva (the spiritual), adi bhutha (Whole perishable creation), adhyatma (The individual soul). It has been mentioned in Shri Shankara Bhagavadpada’s Upnishad Bhashya.

Since the ancient times astrology has been on the top. The Indian systems like Veda, Upnishath, Puranas, Mantras, Tantras, Yantras are all supportive to Astrology. Astrology is rich with Doctrines, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, instrument, Measure of the Earth, Astronomy, and Geography etc. Hore explains about jathaka prashna, muhurtham, calculation of Panchanga, Brihat Jataka (India's foremost astrological text), Svapna (Dream), Angaspurana (the touch), Rain, Geological signs, Hasthasamudrika (Palmistry), ativrushti (excess), anavrushti (scarcity) methods of prediction.

Out of 18 doctrines, at the time of Varaha Mihira the five doctrines namely Poulisha, Romaka, Soura, Paitamaha were used. Aryabhateeya of Aryabhata, Siddhantashekhara of Shripathi, Khandakadhyaya of Brahmaguptha, Laghumanasa of Manju, Siddhanthashiromani of Bhaskaracharya came to light and became popular to pave the way for Surya Siddhantha which remained as a light on Astrology.

At this juncture Universities must come forward to offer a helping hand in arranging seminars, Discussion forums, on Jyothisha Shastra which will help in refining the Knowledge of this age old science. When Astrology has attracted students and enthusiasts from all over the globe to Universities like Nalanda, Takshashila and it is very painful to see people doubting Astrology. Astrology was expanded and refined by contributions and sharing of experience from the Scholars of Greece, Babylon, France, China, Rome, Spain, Italy, and Germany.

The right to education cannot be denied to anybody. And that is the duty of the Government also. Kashi Vishwavidyalaya, Sampoornananda Sanskrit University, Lalbahaddur Shastri Vidyalayas have courses on Astrology.

Astrology should be studied in depth and subjected to intensive research and after subjecting it to proper analysis what will be the problem for its study?

Just like after formulating rules to study the effects in a natural set up man should come forward to study Jyothish Shastra. When people will not consider Engineering as bad from the defective construction of a building, the whole medical system as bad from the death of a patient, weather forecast officer responsible when it doesn’t rain, Lawyer responsible when justice is not accorded to them, how meaningful it is to consider Jyothisa Shastra as wrong? To promote the study of Jyothish Shastra Astronomy should become study material in schools and colleges, children should be able to recognize stars and planets, the movement of them and the names of them. They should include full moon day and no moon day calculations in the Geometry.  People should be aware of the change of times and the need to change the combination of foods, dresses, working pattern accordingly. They should know the specialty of eclipses. They should develop intuitive capabilities of knowing Excess rain falls, draughts, possible war, earthquakes in advance.

Every Astrologer should train more and more students. They should provide supportive scholarly books, arrange for Astronomical publications. By combining traditional and modern astronomical knowledge people can accept astrology better.

I would like to conclude by saying It is the duty of all of us here to arrange for such seminars yearly at least to attract more and more scholars and their knowledge should be shared to the public to create a better awareness on Astrological science.

Thank you very much and Jai Gurudev.
